Babylon 5 Carrie Dobro live on beeb.com
November 29, 1999

With roles in sci-fi series Hypernaut, Babylon 5 and Crusade, and an accomplished improv performer to boot, are there no limits to Carrie Dobro's ambitions? We found out (and heard about the more embarrassing moments) when she joined us for a live Radio Times online chat...

milky: "Is it hard working in a tv genre with not many female lead roles? Do you ever encounter sexism?"

Carrie Dobro: "Interesting question. There is sexism in most businesses; I have encountered sexism in my career although not on the set of Crusade at all"

brinkman: "Is LA as fake as it's made out to be?"

Carrie Dobro: "This is just my personal opinion, albeit all knowing people in this business get their priorities confused, and the reputation for LA being fake is based on some sense of reality here."

Paulette: "Who are your role models?"

Carrie Dobro: "I don't know I have role models. I have favourite actors I would like to work with - Robert Duvall for example or Kevin Spacey or Whoopi Goldberg - a lot I admire."

chatterbox: "Where did you live in Europe and why did you decide to move back to the US?"

Carrie Dobro: "I went to Europe just to have a change in life and wound up going to art college at Camberwell school of Art. After a year and a half I decided to come back to the States and finish my degree. I loved living in London, but there is no place like home. I would love to come back here or to work here."

Aston: "Do you get recognised a lot out of character or is your on-screen persona enough of a disguise?"

Carrie Dobro: "I usually don't get recognised because of all the prosthetic make-up. Even when I am doing a personal appearance and sitting there with my photos, people still don't recognise me until they hear my voice or hear my laugh!"

thomas: "where's your favourite place in the world?"

Carrie Dobro: "I have a few for different reasons. I love the mountains in the west in the States; New York City will always be my home - I love it there. I must say, just so that you limeys don't get a big head, that I love London."

guest29: "Didn't you encounter sexism at TNT since they wanted more sex and violence in 'Crusade'?"

Carrie Dobro: "I must say that that never filtered down onto the set. I wasn't aware of it, we were very protected. I learnt about it after we had an extended hiatus in October but it still never affected us on a daily basis. My view on it now that I know personally I don't think that is the sci-fi genre JMS creates. He creates a very specific fascinating multi- dimensional role, and that to me was the truest sci-fi story to tell."

NEV FOUNTAIN asks: "Is there any chance of seeing your 'Crusade' character in any further B5 spinoff?"

Carrie Dobro: "I have no idea! We are always the last to know what's brewing but I love my character Dorina and I would jump at the chance to play her again."

guest29: "How did you feel when you learned that Crusade was really going to be axed?"

Carrie Dobro: "We were all shocked and very very saddened. It was the best working ensemble and crew that I had ever been involved with. I think it was politics that had nothing to do with the actual show which contributed to its demise. No one I know in this business has ever heard of a series being cancelled before it gets on the air. And then it airs anyway. It was pretty bizarre. It was killed before we even had a shot."

Oliver Jackson1 asks: "Did you watch any sci-fi when you were growing up?"

Carrie Dobro: "Yes actually I did. The re-runs of the original Star Trek were my favourites - my favourites were tribbles episodes. I wanted a tribble and still do!"

Gregor: "Do you actually enjoy sci-fi or is it just a job?"

Carrie Dobro: "Every job is a challenge and a joy. I'd always loved JMS's work, but for me I was excited to work in his universe as well as to have a great job."

scifibabe: "Do you have any pets and what are their names?"

Carrie Dobro: "I have 2 dogs, one is a shiztu and the other is a mix that looks like an ewok. Their names are Anya and Misha."

guest29: "Have you heard about the attempts on the net to save 'Crusade'? Do such things ever stand a chance in your opinion?"

Carrie Dobro: "I think that fans response and desire to save a show has a big impact and can definitely make a difference. We've had great support from fans all over the world and many sites on the internet for Save Crusade, so everybody e-mail Sci-Fi network and say we want our Crusade!"

guest29: "I was wondering if Carrie would ever consider visiting a Dutch sf convention since she had relatives/friends in Amsterdam I'm told?"

Carrie Dobro: "Absolutely. My husband's family are Dutch and I haven't met them yet but I would love to go."

Wendy: "Have you ever done any stage work?"

Carrie Dobro: "Most of my background is all theatre. I started in New York doing hall theatre, worked in a lot of regional companies across the country as well as in LA, and it will always be my first love."

Kate Spode1 asks: "Are there any roles you're dying to play?"

Carrie Dobro: "A lot of people ask me that question and I would have to say no, there is not one role I hanker after."

christopher: "what is coming up in the future"

Carrie Dobro: "Back to auditioning, I am up for a few film projects. I will be starting work producing a film my husband wrote which is good."

Boppi: "What do think of the new James Bond film, and would you be a Bond girl yourself?"

Carrie Dobro: "I have not seen the new James Bond film. Unfortunately I don't think I am babe enough to be a James Bond girl... I could kick some butt though! I do a lot of kick boxing and stuff like that."

Guy: "Carrie, do you think there's life on other planets?"

Carrie Dobro: "Well, I don't know... I think it would be arrogant of us to assume we're the only intelligent beings in the universe so who knows? There are many possibilities."

guest29: "If you met Dureena in real life, what would you say to her?"

Carrie Dobro: "I would tell her to take the chip off her shoulder, kick Gaylen's butt and would ask her how the hell she gets into that leather costume."

christopher: "what has been your best role"

Carrie Dobro: "My favourite has been Dureena on Crusade - that's my favourite."

Boppi: "Whats your most embarrassing moment?"

Carrie Dobro: "I recently finished a two-person play with my husband called Marriage is Murder, and there is a scene where I have him tied up in a chest. I then sit on the chest and have a 2 page discussion on the phone with a friend, and one night, as I was fumbling for the phone, it fell off the stage and into the audience. There was no other phone on set, my husband was in a chest and I was out there with egg on my face."

"So I ran backstage, frantically telling the stage manager, 'I need a phone I need a phone'; she looked at me like she didn't know what a phone was. So I grabbed a hairbrush, ran back on stage, sat on the chest and proceeded to pluck the brush bristles as if I were dialling a phone number, told my imaginary friend on the other end of the phone that I was dialling from one of those new brushphones, and then got on with the rest of the play. The audience gave me a standing ovation!"

"Once in New York while I was doing a play, I had a whole side of a set fall on me and I just had to go on with the play."

Boppi: "How would you like to be remembered in 20 years time?"

Carrie Dobro: "I'd like to be remembered as an actor who did good work and as a person who gave back to society. I think that's very important."

Fraser: "Are there any actors you're dying to work with?"

Carrie Dobro: "Paul Darrow is the only actor for me."

guest29: "Thanks for the funny story *LOL*!! Were there any pranks on the set of Crusade you remember?"

Carrie Dobro: "Not a lot of pranks. When we were working, it was intense. There was alot of laughing but not a lot of pranks."

Lianne Jones asks: "Do you get much of a say when it comes to your costumes?"

Carrie Dobro: "No. The costume designer was very accommodating if things were uncomfortable or hard to work in, but those decisions came from the big guys upstairs."

scifibabe: "Are you a fan of Xena, Warrior Princess?"

Carrie Dobro: "I think she's very funny, has a great persona but I must admit I have only seen the show twice. I love the tongue in cheek of the show and would love to work on it."

Boycie: "What's the best book you've ever read?"

Carrie Dobro: "I read way too many books to have one favourite. Some of my favourites would be Lord of the Rings, 100 years of Solitude, Oh Jerusalem...I read 3 or 4 books a week. I always have to have a book."

Kate Spode1 asks: "What are your fave films?"

Carrie Dobro: "Some of my favourite films are Cool Hand Luke, Hoosiers, Apocalypse Now, It's a Wonderful Life and I recently saw American Beauty, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Rushmore."

guest29: "You've also played a role on Babylon 5. How was the atmosphere on the set compared to the Crusade set?"

Carrie Dobro: "I worked on A Call To Arms for almost a month working mostly with Bruce every day and I have never laughed so much in all my life. We had so much fun."

guest37: "how popular is the show over in the states"

Carrie Dobro: "It was very popular considering all the handicaps. It finished airing in September, and we don't know what will happen after that, ie re-runs or whatever."

guest29: "Were you surprised at the huge following sf shows have? The fans, the conventions, etc.?"

Carrie Dobro: "Totally - there is nothing else like it. No other genre has this kind of support from fans and I think its amazing. The convention circuit is a blast, and the fans are lovely."

Boppi: "What do you want for Christmas?"

Carrie Dobro: "My two left feet.....!"

Alex Tracey asks: "If you were in Friends which character would you play?"

Carrie Dobro: "I would have to play my own character. I think they are all very funny but my favourite female is Lisa Kudrow."

prem: "will there be a film of babylon 5 coming out on the big screen"

Carrie Dobro: "I have no idea. They don't tell us nothing. I think it is something JMS wants to do at some point."

Boppi: "How would you sum yourself up in three words?"

Carrie Dobro: "I give up..."

beeb.com says: "It's time for Carrie to say a final farewell..."

Carrie Dobro: "I would like to say much thanks to all the fans who have supported the show. I thank everyone for their wonderful questions. Everyone e-mail the sci-fi channel in America saying we want the show! I wish everybody a very happy holiday."
