June 14, 1999

TV Guide: We are happy to be chatting with Carrie Dobro from the sci-fi series, Crusade. Carrie also starred in Babylon 5, Townies, Silk Stalkings, and the movie Wall Street.

Dobro: Hello everybody. What's up?

Xyzanda: How did your childhood experiences influence you to make this decision towards acting?

Dobro: I would have to say it wasn't childhood experiences. I was a painter and a sculptor all through high school. I wound up with acting.

TheJazzer1: What other roles have you played?

Dobro: I've done about 50 theatrical productions. I'm in Kansas City doing a two-person play called Marriage is Murder, with my newly-married husband. I've played prostitutes, cops, executives. I've played farce, Shakespeare, pretty much everything. I've done Silk Stalkings, The Young and the Restless, Marry Me or Die. I just did a Beverly Hills 90210. I did a series for Hypernaughts. I was in Assault playing late nights on some channel.

tommygirl1131: How does it feel to be a movie star?

Dobro: It's great doing a series. It's the best job you can have.

cake_swinger_7: Do you enjoy television?

Dobro: I love television. I think when you're shooting TV on film it's very much like doing a film, and you get the immediacy of seeing yourself on film.

shorty540_99: When does the 90210 episode air?

Dobro: I think it aired in May.

CaNdYKoRn420_69: Where are you originally from?

Dobro: I was born in Boston, and I grew up in New Jersey and New York City.

Xyzanda: Did you attend college?

Dobro: Yes I went to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I got a BFA in painting and sculpture. I also studied abroad in England for a while.

ac13_98: How old are you and how old is your character?

Dobro: (LOL) How old I am is something we don't answer in this business. My character is ageless, as am I.

xcrunnerlp: If I wanted to become an actress what advice would you give me?

Dobro: I would say make sure you have an undying passion for it. Don't go into acting because you want to make a lot of money. Take a long time to study your craft and learn to handle rejection well, because there is a lot of that.

xcrunnerlp: If you do have kids, what are their names and how old are they?

Dobro: I don't have kids, I have two dogs. One is a little shistzu, and the other is a mutt that looks like an Ewok.

susan_99_2000: What do you like to do just for fun?

Dobro: I read incessantly. I take lots of Tae Bo and spin classes. I go hiking a lot, and camping. I also refinish furniture. I just finished Stephen King's Bag of Bones. There's an author called Gregory Keyes, who's book A Calculus of Angels is fabulous. Other than that I read biographies, mysteries, thrillers.

CR1079: Out of all the actor/actresses you have worked with who is your favorite?

Dobro: My favorite person to work with is my husband. We've done 3 shows together and he's the best. I also loved working with Bruce Boxleitner in A Call to Arms.

maryilynkennedy: Have you ever lusted after a co-star, ie: Will, from Will and Grace?

Dobro: I would say that I've never lusted after a co-star, although they've all been very nice. The cast of Crusade is a wonderful ensemble of very talented and gifted actors.

SmileyK_15: How long have you been an actress?

Dobro: Twelve years now.

SmileyK_15: Is it all that fun being an actress?

Dobro: When I'm working, it's the most fun I could ever have. It's the most fulfilling thing I could ever do.

Xyzanda: Then doesn't acting become a part of you, and not just a job anymore?

Dobro: What do you mean by "part of you". Please clarify.

trigger45_98: Where are you living now?

Dobro: I'm in Los Angeles.

TV Guide: What are some of your favorite movies?

Dobro: You're gonna laugh, but one of my most favorite movies, is Hoosiers. It's a Wonderful Life, Cool Hand Luke,The Full Monty, Brassed Off. I just love all movies except those slasher movies. Gore movies, I can't watch them. I get scared. I saw Scream and I had nightmares.

Keira_90: Are there any upcoming movies that you will be in that I can look out for?

Dobro: Not as of yet. The whole past year, I've been doing nothing but Crusade. Little TV things, but I haven't been auditioning.

cake_swinger_7: What is your favorite popular music song?

Dobro: My favorite music is jazz and blues. There are a lot of current bands I like, but not one current song, although Ben Folds Five's new album is wonderful.

Xyzanda: Have you ever been to Big Bend National Park in Texas? It's an experience sort of like the Grand Canyon!

Dobro: No.

xcrunnerlp: Do you like running?

Dobro: No. I hate running. I get bored to tears. Other than hiking, I love dance class or tae bo, or spin. Someplace where there are other people and you can get pumped high.

jptwolvs: What is going to happen next season?

Dobro: (LOL) Who knows, we can only hope for the best. We'll know in July. The show has to have a chance. I feel like with 13 episodes you can't really get into it. With JMS, the 13 is just a starting arc. Write the Sci-Fi channel, and tell them they have to have us.

Xyzanda: Have your goals been met with this job or are there other things that you desire of yourself?

Dobro: That's an interesting question. I love to work and my goal is to continue working for the rest of my life. I don't think one role in any medium would be the ultimate fulfillment. Although as of yet, this would be the capper for me. I also want to get into producing. My husband just wrote a screenplay and I'd like to produce that. I've produced theatre in New York. If I get hooked up with a good co-producer I think it could fly.

TV Guide: What is Crusade about?

Dobro: At the end of the last Babylon 5 movie, A Call to Arms, The Drahk had let go a plague on Earth. Because the biology of humans is different, there are 5 years to find a cure, or else all human life will be extinct. While we work on a cure on Earth, they sent a crew on the Excalibur to find life forms or civilizations to find a cure. A lot of things happen, a lot of things could change. We have many adventures while we search out possible cures.

TV Guide: What do you like and dislike about your character on Crusade?

Dobro: I like that she's incredibly tough, incredibly physical and yet she is definitely vulnerable and passionate. I think that mix is a wonderful challenge to play as an actor. If it was up to me, I'd give her more humor. She does have very dry humor. As the series goes on, you'll get to see more of that.

TV Guide: How did you get your part on the show?

Dobro: I went through a series of auditions, just like everybody else. Casting directors bring you in. Then you audition for the producers. Then you audition for the network. This all happened in one week. A Monday, a Wednesday, a Friday.

TV Guide: You have a sexy voice, do you sing?

Dobro: I used to sing a lot, I used to do cabaret in New York. I haven't sung since I moved to Los Angeles.

TV Guide: Have you seen Austin Powers yet?

Dobro: No. Hopefully, I'm going to go see that this week. I loved the first one, one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I think Mike Myers is brilliant.

aaliyahhernandez: If you could do a movie with any actor who would it be?

Dobro: My husband first. Robert Duvall, Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Chris Tucker, Eddie Murphy, Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Johnny Depp, That's a good list.

Xyzanda: How do you feel about our progress toward space exploration? Is it too slow, or are we merely spending money on nonsense, as we the human race are supposed to be the elite creation of The Creator?

Dobro: Well I can't believe that we are the only intelligent life force in this universe. I think we learn a lot about ourselves through space. I went to the Jet Propulsion Lab on a tour and I though it was fascinating. I think it's sad there is no emphasis on space exploration any more.

TV Guide: Any parting comments?

Dobro: Thanks for having a little chat. Myself and Marjean Holden who plays the doctor, will be having our own website up in a week or so. I would urge you all to continue watching the show and to please write the Sci-Fi Channel and Warner Brothers, and thank you very much.

TV Guide: Thank you so much for being with us today, Carrie. Please come back and chat again with us soon!
